The topic of gender equality in the workplace is something that I have been thinking about a lot lately. Not just equality in the workplace (as I have the privilege of working with an all female staff) but in general. Now, I do not claim to be incredibly educated on this topic and it is something I am challenging myself to learn more about. Sometimes it sucks sitting down and researching why my gender is not treated the same as men, it’s a huge downer. But getting informed is where I need to start. I think that women’s equality is something that we will be fighting for for the foreseeable future. Women are down, women are here to fight, and we have made it clear that we have issues with the way women are being treated either in our own workplaces and/or around the world. I believe that women need men to come alongside us and fight with us. There is no way that anything will change, no way that governments and institutions will change, unless the men who run those institutions change the way things are done.
Something else that has been on my mind recently is Sarah Everard. Sarah Everard‘s death is an atrocity. Not only the fact that a police officer is the murderer, but the police trashed and raided the vigil that was put on for Sarah after her death. There are pictures of women being held down by police officers that should not exist. People all around the world are enraged, and I think more people should be enraged by this, I know I am. Sarah was walking home from a friend’s house, did everything right, she was on the phone with a friend and walked on well-lit streets and she still disappeared.
How can walking home be considered dangerous? Why is it now that I feel scared walking around my neighbourhood and I run to my car in parking lots. If nothing changes, it will only get worse. Things don’t tend to stay the same. All people and all genders must fight for equality and respect for one another, in the workplace, in the streets, and in our personal lives.
